Cayman Island Travel Update by Warren Dagrosa Hey everyone! It's been a little less than a month since I returned home from the Grand Cayman trip, and let me tell you, if you missed this trip you missed a really good time. It ranks as one of my best dive vacation experiences ever and after 33 years of diving, I've had many! We left a rainy Philadelphia on Saturday, April 17th and soon arrived at the Sunset House in sunny Grand Cayman. Within two hours of landing all the divers in our group were in the water. Our group consisted of certified divers as well as students, and this first dive helped everyone get into the vacation mode, as well as counting toward their certification dives. I have trained thousands of divers and I feel that doing your certification dives on a tropical dive vacation is the ultimate way to learn. Besides the 4 certification dives, you often get 12 to 16 additional dives under your weight belt, so to speak. The added bonus is having your instructor close by to help hone your diving skills, so when you return home you will be a very competent diver. For this trip we were staying at the Sunset House, one of Grand Cayman's oldest and most well established Dive Resorts. The staff at the Sunset House could not have been more accommodating. They were very friendly and helpful with every request we made of them. Gear problem? No problem. We'll fix it... no charge! Where would you like to dive? No problem, we can go there! Our oceanfront rooms were very nice, and the sunsets were spectacular. The restaurant and bar had a menu that seemed to please every palate. Some of the group ventured down town to sample other dining delights, a Steak house, Seafood and Filipino cuisine. We even had two or three picnic lunches under the coconut palms that adorned the property. The pool and spa were a great place to cool off, and naps on comfortable lounge chairs made the sunny afternoons especially nice. The diving was truly spectacular. We did two boat dives per day, shore diving every afternoon and 3 night dives. There was not a bad dive in the bunch, each dive proved to be as good as the last. We saw all the regular tropical fish: Yellow tails, Grunts, Angelfish, Parrot fish, Squirrel fish, Big Eyes, Hog's heads... plus we saw Lion fish, Sea Turtles, Sting Rays, Eels, Tarpon and a Mermaid. The Sea Fans were large and plentiful. Sponges abound, as well as Elkhorn, Staghorn and brain coral. Wow! What can I say? The weather was amazing, the accommodations were great, the diving was spectacular, the dive boats roomy and comfortable, the food was pleasing, and the group was fun loving. This trip was a real crowd pleaser; Everyone had a great time and we are already planning our next dive adventure! So where would you like to go on your dive vacation? I'm already looking for my next dive vacation destination. I invite everyone that reads this to join me. Email me at
